Tottenham continued their quest for Champions League football next season with a delightful 2-0 over bitter rivals Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The welcome victory over their neighbours keeps the Lilywhites in the top four positions ahead of Newcastle who were tied up with the League Cup Final on Sunday. Derby day started quietly with both teams sussing out the other before Tottenham forced the issue with a couple of raids down the Chelsea left. The second raid led to the first incident of the match when Harry Kane tried to bundle his way through four defenders before falling and landing on the leg of Chelsea’s Tiago Silva. The Brazilian legend immediately showed discomfort holding his knee. After treatment he got to his feet but it was clear that he couldn’t continue. He was replaced by Wes Fofana. |

The half was pretty even with both sides attacking but Tottenham seemed the more likely. Minutes before the interval the first skirmish of the half started. Kai Havertz was late on Richarlison before Hakim Ziyech carried out a second foul. At this point a 15 man brawl erupted with arms thrown and pushing. Emerson Royal protecting his Brazilian team mate Richarlison, barged into Ziyech with the Moroccan reacting throwing a punch back to his face. Emerson stunned then went to ground. Both players were booked before ref Stuart Attwell got an alert from the VAR team. The man in black changed his mind and gave Ziyech a red. Ziyech made his way to the edge of the pitch but waited to see if there was any chance of another decision.
Ref Attwell was then invited to look at the video monitor, which he did and come to the conclusion that Ziyech was not worthy of a red card. The teams went in level with tempers high. Straight after the restart after a Tottenham attack the ball broke loose on the edge of the box and youngster Oliver Skipp rattled a half volley with the outside of his boot into the roof of the Chelsea net. What a goal it was for Skipp. Beset by injuries for a year it was an emotional moment scoring a goal for his boyhood club.
Roared on by the strong 61 000 crowd Tottenham pressed for a second and came close through Harry Kane but the England captain failed to take his chance. Chelsea gradually came into the game and brought on Mason Mount and Patrick Aubamyang to try and expose a tiring Spurs. In the last ten minutes Spurs won a corner down the right. Sub Son chipped the ball into Dier who nodded down to Harry Kane who was arriving at the back post and produced a lovely finish having to reach behind him to guide the ball home.
This was game over and Christian Stellini showed his delight holding onto his winning record. For Chelsea and Graham Potter it was another defeat which piled the pressure on the former Brighton boss.
